Design and Components
The CSD consists of several key components that work together to perform dredging tasks:
Cutter Head: The cutter head is a rotating device equipped with cutting teeth or blades. It is responsible for loosening and breaking up the material at the dredging site. The design of the cutter head can vary depending on the type of material being dredged, such as sand, clay, or rock.
Suction Pipe: The suction pipe is connected to the cutter head and is used to transport the loosened material from the seabed to the dredge pump. The pipe is typically equipped with a suction inlet that allows the material to be drawn into the system.
Dredge Pump: The dredge pump is a powerful centrifugal pump that creates a vacuum to suck up the dredged material through the suction pipe. The pump then discharges the material through a pipeline to a designated location, such as a disposal area or a reclamation site.
Swing System: The CSD is equipped with a swing system that allows the cutter head and suction pipe to move laterally across the dredging area. This system enables the dredger to cover a wide area without needing to reposition the entire vessel.
Spuds: Spuds are large, vertical poles that are lowered into the seabed to anchor the dredger in place during operations. They provide stability and allow the dredger to pivot around a fixed point while the swing system moves the cutter head.
Ladder and Ladder Hoist: The ladder is a structural frame that supports the cutter head and suction pipe. It can be raised or lowered using the ladder hoist to adjust the depth of the dredging operation.
